Designed and classified as a target submarine, the SSTs mission was to act as a target for training for anit-submairne forces.  In addition they helped to develop tactics for the submarine force to avoid the enemy ASW vessels.  Although designed primarily as a trarget trainer, they were equipped to fire torpedoes.  Because of this, they were capable of conducting many missions common to submarine warfare.
