Baracuda, Bass, and Bonita were built for Anti-Submarine Warfare (SSK). The remaining SSKs were converted from fleet boats to SSKs. This required the addition of snorkel and extensive sonar and radar facilities. Also, in some cases the forward torpedo tubes were removed to make way for the additional electronic equipment. And the bow was changed to accomodate this equipmetn. All of this improved the listening capabilities of the SSKs. The conning tower fairing was streamlined. Following a few years of service as SSKs, most of them were reclassified as AGSS.
